This competition is now open for entries.

Our annual short story competition began in 2009 and is very popular. We receive entries from all over the world. 

This year we have increased our prize money to £700


First prize £700
Second prize £250
Third prize £100

Plus a prize for writers in Devon of £100

Closing date: 28th February 2019 (Midnight)


Competition Rules 


  1. The competition is open to published and unpublished authors (except members of Exeter Writers) writing in any genre except children’s. 
  2. Stories must not have been previously published nor won a prize in any other competition. If the story has previously been self-published, the story must be out-of-print (if it was printed) or out-of-circulation/withdrawn (if it was electronic) for the whole of the duration of the competition, up until the winners are announced.
  3. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please be prepared to withdraw if you are placed elsewhere. The entrance fee will not be refunded.
  4. You may re-enter a non-winning story that was submitted to the competition in a previous years, but it must have been significantly and substantially revised. Previous prize-winning stories are not eligible for re-entry, no matter how much they have been revised.
  5. The maximum word limit is 3,000. There is no lower limit.
  6. Stories are judged anonymously. Do not include your name anywhere on the manuscript.
  7. The entry fee per story is £7 sterling.  Email entries (the preferred option) must be paid by PayPal. For postal entries, payment is by cheque or postal order (not cash). Multiple entries are allowed. If entering by post, an electronic copy of the story must be provided if the story is long-listed.   8.  No stories will be returned, so make sure you keep copies of your entries.
  9. Once again we are offering a prize for the best story submitted by a writer living in Devon. This will be judged from all stories submitted by writers from a Devon address. 
  10. No story may win more than one prize.
  11. The closing date is midnight 28th February 2019.  Late entries will not be accepted.       
  12. Winners will be announced before July 2019. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize-winning stories, as well as the winner of the Devon Prize, will be published on the Exeter Writers website. Copyright remains with the author.
  13.  The judges’ decision is final.
