1st Prize 2015 - The Parrots of Peckham by Ceri Lowe-Petraske

The Parrots of Peckham  by Ceri Lowe-Petraske ‘It’s dislocated,’ says the doctor and gives one of those polite closed coughs. Mama watches, her mouth open as it is usually given to being, gawping at the whiteness of the counter and the whiteness of the thin medical bed cover and, most of all, the whiteness of the doctor. She yanks up my shorts so my buttocks don’t show.

2nd Prize 2015 - Return to Budapest by J D Hellsinger

Return to Budapest  by J D Hellsinger It was too late to go back inside so he stayed where he was, not moving. She came tapping her way up the stairs.  Maybe she’d go on past. But when she reached the landing she stopped to catch her breath. She directed her milky gaze at him.

3rd Prize 2015 - Massive Stone Lions by Lisa McDonald

Massive Stone Lions  by Lisa McDonald And then, eighteen months ago, my dad died. He was only sixty. It was a bit of a shock to us despite the ciggies and his stress from work. I don’t know why people are so horrible to traffic wardens. Mam cried so hard she broke the blood vessels in her eyes. Dr Griffiths had to come round three times in the first week.

Devon Prize 2015 - Desire by Daisy-Mae Perkins

Desire  by Daisy-Mae Perkins The water is jade. Seaweed has wrapped itself around the ropes tying the rowing boats to the dock. The plants sway and flick slowly in the current. It’s not deep. I can see the bottom. I wonder if I plunged in and looked up would the sky look like an ocean?

Gorgito's Prize

The debut novel by member, Elizabeth Ducie, has been chosen as runner-up in this year’s Self-Published Book of the Year Awards.  Gorgito’s Ice Rink is a tale of love, loss and broken promises, set mainly in 1990s Russia, just after the fall of the Soviet Union. During that period, Elizabeth was helping to restructure the Russian pharmaceutical industry, and “although the story is completely fictional, Gorgito is based on someone I worked for, and some of my experiences found their way into the story” she said.
